Est-ce en choisissant l\u2019action, notamment politique, dans la sph\u00e8re publique ? Est-ce plut\u00f4t en \u00ab contemplant \u00bb, c\u2019est-\u00e0-dire en se consacrant \u00e0 la recherche et \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9criture ? Ou encore en enseignant ? Ces questions sont centrales dans l\u2019Antiquit\u00e9. Pr\u00e9sent d\u00e8s Platon, le d\u00e9bat sur les genres de vie devient pr\u00e9gnant dans les philosophies hell\u00e9nistiques et prend une tournure singuli\u00e8re \u00e0 Rome, o\u00f9 les concepts grecs de praxis et de theoria rencontrent les notions d\u2019otium et de negotium.<br \/>\nL\u2019\u0153uvre de S\u00e9n\u00e8que s\u2019av\u00e8re, sur cette question, tout \u00e0 fait novatrice. Dans une approche qui m\u00eale des enjeux philosophiques et culturels, mais aussi linguistiques et litt\u00e9raires, le philosophe romain renouvelle \u00e0 la fois le d\u00e9bat philosophique et la notion romaine d\u2019otium, synonyme chez lui de retraite philosophique. Prolongeant les r\u00e9flexions de Cic\u00e9ron sur la l\u00e9gitimit\u00e9 de l\u2019\u00e9tude philosophique, mais poussant plus loin que ce dernier la promotion de la contemplation et pr\u00e9cisant la posture sociale du philosophe, S\u00e9n\u00e8que est le premier penseur romain \u00e0 construire une v\u00e9ritable \u00e9thique de l\u2019otium. L\u2019int\u00e9r\u00eat philosophique de l\u2019\u0153uvre s\u00e9n\u00e9quienne se double d\u2019un int\u00e9r\u00eat litt\u00e9raire dans la mesure o\u00f9 l\u2019\u00e9criture est une activit\u00e9 majeure du philosophe retir\u00e9 dans l\u2019otium.
